Recent Updates

By melindam, August 25, 2007 12:20 pm

In the last little bit, we have started making more improvements on the house, and purchasing more accessories! For example, last weekend we bought a beautiful gas grill at The Home Depot and got it connected to our gas two days later. We have already had several meals cooked on the barbecue and expect many more. It is a really nice grill, with side burners, a temperature gauge and a rotisserie. As it is nearing the end of summer, all the grills were on sale so we were able to get a nicer one than we’d planned. Sometimes waiting has advantages! We took some photos of our grill, so we’ll link soon!

In addition to getting the grill hooked up, we finally got our stove hooked up too last weekend. What a change to be able to bake and use the stove top! It cooks so fast! I cannot believe we lived for 8 months without a proper stove or oven. The things you get used to…

We have also had some fixes to our kitchen. The Calders came this week and retreated the butcher block so it looks even better now. They also replaced the glass in the cabinets to the ribbed glass which we love. We will take more pictures and post. It isn’t easy because we destoyed our digital camera on our canoeing trip and are using the video camera to take stills. We’ll get there.

Anyway, my parents are coming today and they will see our house for the first time. It sure looks different from when we bought it!

3rd Floor Washroom – Tiles and Toilet

By bsharwood, June 13, 2007 11:23 am

We’ve been working on the 3rd floor this week and now we’ve almost got the washroom done. The tiles are in, the toilet is installed, and there’s just a lot of trim – and, of course, a vanity – something we don’t have yet for any of our washrooms.

Here’s a picture of the 3rd floor washroom as it is today.

Granite Counters

By bsharwood, June 9, 2007 5:12 pm

Check out the granite countertops they came and installed yesterday. They look great. We’re not allowed to put anything on them until tomorrow, so we’re using the island instead.

Yesterday I also worked on more 3rd floor tiling. Finished up the flooring, without the grout, and started up the shower walls. By tomorrow we should have it all done, with at least some grout on and hopefully the toilet installed.

3rd Floor

By bsharwood, June 7, 2007 1:19 pm

We’ve decided to take on some of the 3rd floor so yesterday I went out and got tiles and a toilet for the
3rd floor bathroom.

Last night I finished up some painting in the 3rd floor hallway and stair area in the same colour as the second floor. Today I tackled some of the floor of the bathroom. As you can see from the photo I came up 3 tiles short. Lots of spare pieces around, but with the big tiles you definitely need to get extra.

We’re excited for the kitchen countertops to come tomorrow. We’re also sharing a bin with our neighbours over the weekend to remove our concrete pile from the back of the house.

Housework

By bsharwood, June 2, 2007 3:22 pm

Over the past work Melinda and I have been doing a lot of smaller projects after much of the kitchen is in.

During the week I installed the dishwasher and a nice gooseneck faucet that the lady from City Home Granite brought with her when she templated the counter tops. It was a lot of piping, soldering and electrical work, and there were some issues along the way, but it’s going now and it’s cleaning the dishes well.

We unpacked most of the kitchen boxes last weekend and put them into the cabinets. There’s even a bit of room left over.

Since then we’ve been doing a lot of little things like cleaning the place up, picking up a dining room table top and setting it up, moving furniture, and cleaning up the back garden.

Our neighbours have a bunch of concrete to get rid of so one of my projects this week is going to be to get someone to come with a bin and remove our big pile of rocks from the back yard. That will make the place much nicer!

Unpacking the Kitchen

By bsharwood, May 26, 2007 7:18 pm

Today, with Aman’s help, we unpacked a bunch of the boxes of kitchen stuff from downstairs and organized the kitchen. Although we unpacked a lot of boxes and there are only a few left there’s seems to still be quite a bit of room in the shelves, which is good.

We also cleaned up much of the first floor including the front room.

Check out the kitchen now.

Yesterday

By bsharwood, May 26, 2007 7:14 pm

Yesterday Ed’s carpenters came in the morning and continued installing the kitchen. When they left at around 2 they had most of the stuff done but there’s still a bunch of trim and finishings they need to complete.

After they left I went to work to install the main floor powder room toilet. With these fancy toilets we have they are a challenge to install. It took a few hours and a few tile drill bits but it’s finally done.

The main floor is really looking good now.

Preparing for the Kitchen

By bsharwood, May 21, 2007 5:53 pm

Yesterday and today we spent some time prepping for the kitchen which, we hope, is arriving tomorrow morning. We went and got some more main floor wall paint (Carolina Strand) as well as tiles for the main floor bathroom.

Yesterday was mostly painting. We put a first coat on the bathroom walls as well as primed and painted the outside of the pocket door. We’re also continuing to take care of our new front lawn. It looks so far like it’s taking, except for a couple pieces.
Today was a busy day. We started by adding a second coat to the bathroom as well as the pocket door drywall. We then moved the kitchen out of the way to make room for the incoming kitchen as well as allow us to put a coat of paint over the west wall, something we hadn’t done yet. It will be mostly covered by the counters and cabinets but we thought it would be good to get it done before they arrived.

Then we moved on to tiling. We found these cool tiles at Olympia Tile called Tropical Grass Brown. We laid these in the bathroom as well as the little room beyond. Check out the picture of it – looks a little rough still, but a little grout and cleaning and it’ll be great.

Hopefully this will be our last night without a kitchen, but we’ll see. Check back tomorrow and I’ll blog whether Ed has arrived or not.

A Front Lawn

By bsharwood, May 19, 2007 5:02 pm

Today was a beautiful long weekend Saturday so we went this morning to get some paint for the main floor walls and some sod for the front lawn.

In the afternoon we laid a nice front lawn.
