Hard Labour – and great neighbours

By bsharwood, June 9, 2007 5:16 pm

Today we shared a couple of concrete disposal bins with our neighbour on the west side, Joe. From about 9am until 3pm we took his concrete off his front lawn and he helped us take the concrete from our back yard, including the big pile right near the garage. It was a long day of lifting heavy loads and carrying the out to the bin, but was made much easier by their help. We owe them a debt of gratitude!

Ordered tile for the Master bathroom

By melindam, December 7, 2006 3:48 pm

We are probably going to be tiling this weekend. The first set of tiles we ordered was not available, but today we found some that are almost the same that will work just as well. I think our bathroom is going to look great, and am very excited! We can pick up the tiles tomorrow and will start the work on Saturday.

Brian was at the house last night, and says the drywallers are 2/3 done so we are getting closer to being able to prime and then paint.

I think this weekend we are also going to start filling boxes. 24 days until we need to move!

Cleaning up

By bsharwood, November 30, 2006 12:58 am

I went over to the house after work and cleaned up the mess of drywall pieces around the house. It’s amazing how dusty and dry the house is now.

We’ll be in busy the next couple nights but hopefully over the weekend there’ll be some plastering done and by next weekend we’ll be priming the walls and thinking about bathrooms, floors, trim and finishing. Quite exciting.

Cleaning

By melindam, September 26, 2006 7:44 am

I met Brian at the house after work. It appeared that no one had been there or done anything yesterday, but there was some stuff we needed to do. Brian had already swept and cleaned the main floor, so we went to the 2nd floor and cleaned up some debris and sawdust, and then hit the basement.

The basement is still quite damp and uncomfortable due to the low ceilings, and there was a lot of insulation and drywall and other garbage to clean. I worked on that while Brian demolished the shower that was down there. He found a lot of empty cigarette packs in the shower ceiling. So, more evidence that the prior tenants did not use the showers to wash! NO! They used the downstairs shower as a smoking room. It’s in the bin now. Taking out the shower was for the HVAC guy, who now has more access to the ceiling in the basement.
After we finished in the basement, we did a quick sweep of the main floor again. That was it for yesterday.

From one to another

Roofing, HVAC and a Wall

By bsharwood, August 28, 2006 9:52 pm

Back at normal work today. It was a busy day today but at the end of the day I used our home inspector’s list and called a couple roofing guys. Found one that sounded good, and he’s coming tomorrow to look at the roof for a final quote.

I also called another heating and air-conditioning guy about doing the ductwork. The other folks haven’t called back in a few weeks and I don’t feel like chasing guys down to give quotes.

Fred was at the house today and knocked down the last wall on the back section of the house and rebuilt it. It really needed doing. I hope that’s the last demolition project we are doing on the house.

By bsharwood, August 23, 2006 11:28 pm

Well it’s now Wednesday and we’re, perhaps, a little behind schedule due to some hard demolition on Monday.

On monday we took out the second floor room which was leaking like crazy. It turned out that there was about 15 layers of roofing including some plywood that was soaked through with water. It was tough work and we even got rid of the floor and the floorboards.

On Tuesday we got rid of the first floor and started rebuilding the floor of the second. I had to leave at around 6 because I had tickets with Aman to the Jays game from Big Brothers. The seats were those ones right behind home plate. Melinda told me that Aman and I were on the TV for most of the night from that camera behind the pitcher.

This morning I went to pick up a Sawsall I got on ebay which didn’t work from a place called Butlers at Gerarrd and Coxwell. When I brought it back to the house, we tried it out and it died right away. I swear I think it’s cursed.

The plumbers were by on Tuesday and did a little more work. I think they will be back on friday and we should get the inspection done soon. That’d be one thing out of the way.

Fred and I have had a helper this week in Cesar. He’s been good, although he doesn’t speak much english. He’s helped put a lot of things in the bin, and he doesn’t need to be told what to do.

Oh, ya!. One more thing in this late-night post. I had a little medical emergency on Tuesday. I bounced my head on the latch of the bin and I started bleeding. I had to come home and have a shower to wash the blood out of my hair. It was a lot of blood, but it didn’t really hurt.

Apart from a little rain this afternoon it has been a beautiful week. From all the work outside I have been getting a good tan.

Well, I’ve put the pictures here. More to come later in the week. Temp stairs due to arrive tomorrow.

Prepping for the week ahead

By bsharwood, August 20, 2006 9:52 pm

Melinda and I went to the house today for a few hours and did a little more jackhammering, both on the wall we were working on yesterday, and also on the other concrete wall thing in the backyard.

We then started working on getting rid of some of the siding and roofing in preparation for this week that I am taking off from work and we’re rebuilding the back sections of the house.

I am looking forward to this week and getting the back of the house all built and prepared for the doors and windows.

Hopefully I’ll hear from the HVAC guys and we’ll get our temp stairs in. It’s quite the pain to climb up and down the ladders.

Our pictures from the day are here.

One more power tool mastered

By melindam, August 20, 2006 12:07 pm

Yesterday we jack-hammered. We have these concrete walls in the back yard that need to go, so Brian and I rented a jack-hammer to do the job. It took me a few tries to even feel comfortable, but I got the hang of the jackhammer. Sort of. It got caught a couple of times, and my teeth were chattering from the pressure, but Brian and I took turns and got a lot of the wall beside the house removed. We are going to add French doors in the back room, so need to get rid of that wall. Photos: Here

Fred was also in the house and he framed in more sections of the master bath and our nice walk-in closet in the bedroom. Those are the other photos on the page from yeserday.

We are going back today to jackhammer some more. It is fun but tiring!

Bathroom Frames

By bsharwood, July 21, 2006 1:01 am

Arrived at the house today at around 5:30 and saw the framing for the first floor bathroom that fred had installed. It’s pretty neat. And, also, it’s got a very high ceiling, which you can see in the framed section of the house.

After Fred left I went to work on some more demolition. It’s amazing how much more needs to be done, even when you think it’s all finished. I worked primarily on the second floor, but I think the 3rd floor needs quite a bit more. I think we’ll need to take down the ceilings there too, and deal with more nasty insulation.

Been trying to figure out what to do with the chimney that goes up through the house. It really takes up space in some rooms, so removing it would be great. I’ve got some people coming in over the next week to look at it and offer advice and services. Hopefully that will clarify the situation.

Oh, and one other kinda funky thing. Melinda phoned references for the plumber we are thinking of using and, small world, it’s someone we know. Chances of that, huh?
