Mortgage Brokers

By bsharwood, July 31, 2007 11:35 am

I’m not going to go into detail about this at this point (but I probably will in a future post once we’ve got this behind us), but let’s just say we wouldn’t suggest using mortgage brokers. Our experience has been shoddy workmanship, lack of client understanding, and an incredibly slow process.
Do not assume the brokers are working in your best interest. They are not. They work for the lenders, and probably have preferred lenders.

That’s all for now – before I go into a rant.

Living room with TV

By bsharwood, March 25, 2007 7:10 pm

On saturday afternoon Melinda and I moved our main TV down to the first floor into the back room where it will remain. Although the room isn’t finished it’s nice to actually hang out downstairs with the good TV.

Hardwood done (on main floor)

By bsharwood, March 25, 2007 7:08 pm

Fred and I finished off all the hardwood on the main floor on Friday night, with the clean-up getting complete around 1am. The whole frontroom/library is now done. It’s all looking good.

All those previous tenants are now out of the census.

New Years Eve

By bsharwood, December 31, 2006 7:45 pm

It’s been a long day. We got up at 7am from the Granite Place and packed the remainder of our stuff after a restless sleep and a nice dinner at one of our local favourite places at our old place, Cava.

We went to the house early and unloaded our mattresses, the wine fridge and lots of other odds and ends left over from the apartment. We then dropped off the rented van and headed back to the apartment to finish up the last stuff in the Granite and give back the keys to the doormen.

We were somewhat rushed because the Rogers guy called and said he was almost at the house so we raced to get there before he left. Of course, the first thing we set up in our new bedroom was the TV and the internet – so we could get the Rogers guy to test it out. I have to admit, it was great that there was a fairly small window for the cable set-up, he called before he got to the place, and when he arrived he did a fantastic job setting up both our cable and internet. Congrats Rogers!

We then put the bed together and brought stuff up to the bedroom to make it livable. It’s going to be camping for a bit, but the room is looking quite civilized. Beau, Katia and the girls came over and brought some pizza for us.

We were without internet for a few days, but now we’ve put the new pictures from the move and the last few days here.

We’re heading out to a New Year’s Eve Party. Hopefully we won’t end up at the wrong address tonight!

We’re in!

Today we cleared the last of our stuff out of the Granite and are now at the new place moving things in. We got up at 7am and moved stuff.

More later.

The Countdown continues… and a rude 911 operator

By melindam, December 29, 2006 9:25 pm

Brian and I got to the house by 9am and immediately applied the second coat of paint to the baseboards. Fred was in soon after ready to install the baseboards.

What else did we do today? We primed and painted the door casings also; we moved the laundry sink to the main floor so it would be out of our living space, cleaned the windows on the 2nd floor, primed the windowsills, painted the bedroom closet, went to the Pho place for lunch with Wayne and Alec, and went on a drive to try to buy hanging coat racks.

On the way to the place I had my first experience with 911, and it wasn’t positive. Driving up Spadina we passed a car, in the left lane, with the driver stopped, but not parked, and he was sitting in the driver’s seat with his head back, eyes closed, mouth wide open. I got worried and decided to call 911 about him. You know how you always hear the stories about the lovely 911 operator who talks the child through saving his mom’s life, or the 911 operator who stays on the phone with the injured person so they stay awake? I didn’t get that 911 operator. I got the snotty one. I told her the story about the guy in the car, and she interrupted me in this rude voice and said, “Hold On, I’m switching you to ambulance”. I was so surprised by her tone that I commented to Brian, “She was just so rude, she interrupted me,” and imitated her. She then told me “I can hear you!” and I said “that’s fine. It doesn’t change the fact that you were rude!” LOL! Then, everytime I repeated what she said to Brian she’d say, “I can still hear you!” I told her I was trying to help someone and she had no reason to be a bitch. LOL. It was funny, but it makes me less inclined to call 911 to help a stranger with that attitude coming from the operators. Thank God I wasn’t suffering, because this chick would not have cared.

Anyway, it has been a busy week, busy day, we move tomorrow and are still packing. We did take photos, but I don’t know when we’ll post them.

One more full day of work.

By bsharwood, December 28, 2006 9:16 pm

Melinda and I had a slow start this morning after waking up a little late. We drove all the stuff we packed to the house, then went on an excursion to New Canadians Lumber. We thought we were going to go up to a place Fred recommended called Fairbanks up at Dufferin and Steeles, but we just didn’t have time. We came back to the house with a bunch of baseboards and door casings hanging out of the back of the vehicle. Who knew choosing this sort of thing was so difficult? We ended up going for a colonial style in both the casings and baseboards. Fred started working on the door casings and got the inside bedroom ones done by the end of the day.
After bringing it into the house we finished priming the third floor and then Melinda started priming baseboards.

I had to head out to the office for an hour to take care of some errands but Melinda did a good job priming all the baseboards before I got back a couple hours later. I brought some Black Camel sandwiches with me for everyone.

By the end of the day, and with Aman’s help, near the end we had a coat of finish paint on all the baseboards and did some cleaning up on the second floor. Fred and I also had a go at fixing the leaky master bathroom toilet. By the time we left the leaking seemed to have stopped. Hopefully we fixed the problem.

Another busy day ahead.

Yesterday – and some appliances!

By bsharwood, December 28, 2006 8:58 pm

We’ve been so busy we’ve hardly had a chance to post blog entries. We’re actually going to move on Saturday having booked a cargo van for the day. So we have one more full day to get the master bedroom and bathroom ready to move in.

We’ll do a separate post for today’s activities, but we’ll start with yesterday.

We started the day by finishing staining the second floor doors, then moved on to the third floor and cleaned up a lot of dust, with lots of shopvaccing. We then primed one of the bedrooms, the bathroom, and the hall.

On the way home we stopped by The Brick and found a few appliances. We got a really nice Kitchenaid refrigerator, the floor model, as well as a nice washer and dryer set. The fridge is going to be delivered on Friday, and the washer and dryer next Tuesday.

Our New Fridge, in the Showroom.jpg

When we got home we also packed a bunch of boxes and filled the car full so when we left in the morning we had a load to take to the house. It was a tiring day and we were exhausted by the end of it.

We have pictures up to yesterday on the website now here.

4 more days

By melindam, December 27, 2006 10:19 am

Yes, it’s true. We have to be out of our apartment by Sunday. So this means we must move into the house this weekend. Lots still to do.

Yesterday we had more help from Alex. Wish she lived here cause she is a big help! We primed the first floor and the remainder of the second, stained the bedroom doors, and did some ceiling paint. We had to stop because we used up the ceiling paint and went to Home Depot. Home Depot was having a sale on appliances (BOXING DAY SALE!!!!!) but they were all the really low end ones, the type that was in our place when we bought it, only from 20 years ago.

Brian arranged for us to rent a cargo van for Saturday so the clock is ticking!

More work to do today, including finishing painting the 2nd floor, staining the other side of the doors, getting some trim, and unloading all the boxes that are in our car. So much to do, so little time!
